For the Austrian Red Cross, think modular has implemented two Moodle platforms that connect over 210,000 users – from paramedics to executives. kurse.roteskreuz.at offers structured training, while wissen.roteskreuz.at provides freely accessible knowledge. With individual authentication, automated reports, interfaces to state systems, and modern design, a digital education environment has been created that connects people.

Our scope of work
Hosting and implementation of the Moodle LMS for employees and external volunteers of the ÖRK
Integration with various third-party systems across the regional organizations
Two platforms, one goal: Digital education for all – internally and publicly.
The Austrian Red Cross is not only one of the country's largest humanitarian organizations but also one of the central educational providers in the health and social sector. To fulfill this responsibility digitally, two powerful learning platforms based on Moodle LMS were developed in collaboration with think modular – digital solutions: kurse.roteskreuz.at and wissen.roteskreuz.at.
Both platforms serve different purposes and are targeted at clearly defined audiences:
kurse.roteskreuz.at is an internal learning platform designed for active members – including paramedics, conscientious objectors performing community service, administrative staff, instructors, and executives. It provides structured education and training and is accessible only to registered users.
wissen.roteskreuz.at is a public platform aimed at the interested general population. It offers freely accessible content on topics such as first aid, caregiving knowledge, pediatric emergencies, or health prevention.
The platforms enable decentralized management at the state level while maintaining shared technical quality standards.
The implementation deliberately takes into account the federal structure of the Red Cross: Each state organization has its own course areas with individually controllable content. At the same time, central technical operations – including hosting, maintenance, and further development – are handled by think modular. This ensures both autonomy and consistent quality standards.
Automated processes and direct integration with existing systems ensure smooth and efficient administrative workflows.
A key feature is the integration of individual authentication mechanisms for each state organization. Existing user directories can thus be integrated, and access can be managed based on roles – for example, for regional training models or function-specific courses.
Additionally, interfaces to state administration systems have been implemented, allowing course completions to be automatically transferred – for central recording of training certificates, recertifications, or confirmations of participation. This integration creates valuable synergies between the learning platform and organizational management.
Numerous Moodle features and transparent reports enable data-driven development of educational measures.
The digital course offerings are diverse and specifically tailored to the various roles within the organization – for example, for paramedics in emergency services, physicians, participants in secure driving training (SEF), conscientious objectors, district training officers, or executives. In addition, there are test and reference areas for the development and quality assurance of content.
Many Moodle features support the learning processes – including automated certificates, self-enrollment, multilingual content, modular course structures, and personalized dashboards. Furthermore, custom reports have been developed, allowing administrators to analyze learning progress, user activity, and training status in detail. This not only creates transparency but also enables data-driven further development of educational measures – at both state and federal levels.
The result: a future-proof learning environment that combines internal qualification with public knowledge transfer.
The continuous further development of the platforms kurse.roteskreuz.at and wissen.roteskreuz.at takes place in close cooperation with the Training Center of the Red Cross. Educational requirements, technological standards, and organizational processes are continuously coordinated. think modular supports the project as a strategic and technical partner – focusing on scalability, security, usability, and systemic integration.
think modular understands and accommodates the complexity of our organization and provides customized solutions for our learning management system. We repeatedly benefit from their practical experience with Moodle.
