ID-Push is a Moodle plugin integrated into the education portal of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education. It automatically synchronises central user identities with local school networks and enables password resets. think modular contributed to the conceptual design and was responsible for the technical implementation and integration.

Development and implementation of the Moodle plugin ID-Push

  Training for administrative staff

A single login: ID-Push bridges the education portal, school infrastructure and cloud platforms.

With the new service ID-Push, a key challenge of digital school organisation has been resolved: the connection between the centralised user management in the national education portal and the local IT infrastructures of schools. Teachers, pupils and school staff often use different login credentials for various systems – whether local, regional or cloud-based. For the first time, ID-Push establishes an automated bridge, allowing the central user identity of the education portal to be used consistently in local school networks and connected cloud services

Thanks to ID-Push, manual account management across multiple systems becomes obsolete. School authorities and schools benefit from a GDPR-compliant, low-maintenance solution, which automatically transfers up-to-date user data – such as names, class memberships or roles – from the school administration system, through the education portal, into the local Active Directory or similar infrastructure.

The service was developed as a dedicated Moodle plugin and is directly integrated into the education portal, which is based on the open-source learning platform Moodle (bildung.gv.at). This means ID-Push is deeply embedded in existing training and administration processes and can be seamlessly combined with other features of the portal.

Behind the technology of ID-Push: Flexibility, security and reduced workload.

The technical foundation of ID-Push has been designed to flexibly integrate with existing school IT infrastructures – regardless of whether a school uses Microsoft Active Directory, OpenLDAP or other directory services. Thanks to a standardised interface, ID-Push can be connected to the respective system environment and continuously synchronises user information, such as class changes, new enrolments or account deactivations.

One key advantage: password management is significantly simplified. Users can reset their passwords independently via the education portal – or receive support from authorised school staff with specific permissions. This relieves the burden on local IT teams while improving both security and user acceptance.

Configuration is managed through an intuitive, web-based interface, where schools and school authorities can define which data is transferred, how, and at what intervals. The entire process is documented, logged, and fully compliant with data protection regulations for use in educational institutions.

ID-Push in action: Practical advantages for schools and local authorities.

ID-Push creates real added value for day-to-day school IT operations: reducing redundancies, media discontinuities and manual administrative effort. Schools benefit from up-to-date and unified user accounts, regardless of whether they are used locally on school computers, in pedagogical networks, or in cloud services such as learning management systems.

For teachers and learners, this means: a single login, fewer technical barriers – and secure, fast access to all relevant digital resources. School authorities also benefit from more efficient administration: by automating key processes, resources can be allocated more effectively and technical standards can be maintained more easily.

In combination with other services offered by the national education portal, this results in a future-proof and scalable infrastructure for school digitalisation

ID-Push represents a consistent step towards integrated digital education management – combining technical feasibility, data protection, and the realities of everyday teaching.

Think Modular proved to be a reliable and dedicated partner throughout both the conceptual and implementation phases of the ID-Push project. Particularly noteworthy was their proactive and solution-oriented approach during every stage of development. The Federal Ministry of Education sincerely thanks the team for the constructive and collaborative partnership.
